Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le are leaving Google for the new lab, where Dean plans to run an automated version of the scientific method. Google is taking a stake.
Discovery Loop, the company Jeff Dean and three other senior Google AI scientists are cofounding, launches today. Google is taking a stake in the lab its chief AI scientist is vacating to join.
The four cofounders are Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. Two are cofounders of Google Brain, the research organization that helped build modern AI inside Google and later merged with DeepMind. Vinyals is a vice president of research at DeepMind. Le is the scientist behind Google's AutoML-Zero work, the most direct existing example of the team's stated approach.
Wired's exclusive, built on a pre-launch joint interview with all four, frames the exit as a "devastating" blow to Google in the AI model race and compares Dean and Ghemawat to "Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ditching the Rolling Stones to start a new band." The comparison lands because the four are not generic attrition. Two of the four cofounded the unit they are now leaving, and the four have vacationed together for years, according to Wired. A coordinated exit by the people who built a unit is a different kind of loss than any individual departure.
Dean and his cofounders are calling their thesis an automated version of the scientific method: propose an experiment, implement what is needed to run it, evaluate it, and harvest results. Run that loop thousands of times in parallel, according to Wired, and the system could unlock advances in science, biology, chip design, and improved AI models. Le's prior work on AutoML-Zero is the most direct prior example. The new company is the bet that the approach can be applied to those other fields at much larger scale.
Dean previewed the thesis on July 25 at Y Combinator's Startup School in San Francisco, addressing 6,000 would-be founders at the Chase Center. He did not name the new company or his cofounders at that event; the full team and the public launch land today.
The stake Google is taking complicates the read but does not soften it. A stake is a courtesy in a market where Google's AI competitors are well-funded; it is not a retention mechanism for the people who built a unit. The four converged on the idea only a few weeks ago, according to Wired. The speed of the decision is itself a signal about how complete the plan to leave had already been. The stake is the price of an orderly exit, not the cost of keeping the team.
The competitive question is the one the wire copy can name but not answer: how Google replaces founding-tier technical leadership of its AI research while OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta continue to hire at the top of the market. The Discovery Loop launch starts that clock. The stake Google is writing does not stop it.
