The AI infrastructure build-out is running into a construction bottleneck. Factory-prefabricated modular data centers — built from standardized subsystems assembled on-site — are emerging as the industry's answer, with Alibaba Cloud, AWS, and Meta all adopting variants of the approach.
The three hyperscalers are not moving in lockstep, but the convergence is visible. Alibaba Cloud, speaking through Chinese tech outlet 雷锋网 (Leiphone), says its fully modular design has cut delivery of large AI data centers to about 100 days, a cadence it describes as globally leading. Alibaba Cloud also says the same approach reduces total build cost by more than 10%, and that it plans to triple its global modular data center capacity in 2026. Those claims — the 100-day timeline, the cost-reduction figure, the capacity target, and the comparison baselines — are the company's, presented without named methodology or independent benchmark.
AWS and Meta provide a structural parallel. A SemiAnalysis summary carried by 163.com says both companies have adopted modular data centers that compress build cycles 36% and trim cost roughly 8%. The open question is whether any customer deployment, regulatory filing, or peer confirmation will corroborate the 100-day timeline and the cost figures for Alibaba's specific approach.
