Europe's new ~€5B (~$5.7B) fund made its first investment: ICEYE, the Finnish satellite radar operator, in a ~€1B round at a €10B valuation.
The Scaleup Europe Fund, an EU-backed public-private vehicle managed by Sweden's EQT, made its first investment on August 5: co-leading a roughly €1 billion Series F in ICEYE at a reported valuation above €10 billion, per EQT's release. TechCrunch values the round at more than $1 billion (TechCrunch).
ICEYE, founded in Finland in 2014, runs the world's largest commercial synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation. SAR satellites image through clouds and at night, which is why seven European governments now rely on them for sovereign intelligence. ICEYE says it moved a fully operational capability to Poland in under 12 months from contract signing, a deployment-speed benchmark for the category (Bloomberg, Euractiv).
The roughly €5 billion (~$5.7 billion per TechCrunch) fund is the EU's most concrete move yet to plug Europe's late-stage deep-tech capital gap, and ICEYE fits the mandate: AI, quantum, dual-use space, and clean tech are all in scope. EU Commission President von der Leyen tied the deal to "turning European innovation into our competitive edge," though the same release notes Europe is "undoubtedly playing catch-up" in transformative tech like AI.
The next two or three SEF bets will show whether ICEYE was a category signal or simply the most ready scaleup in the pipeline.
