A US owned floating gas storage unit and a Greek owned LNG tanker sat moored side by side at the Egyptian port. The geometry of that berth turned one strike into a blast on blast risk.
The first explosion hit the Greek-owned LNG tanker GasLog Salem at about 2:10 pm on Wednesday at the Egyptian port of Damietta, on the Nile Delta. The order to the Egyptian harbor pilots and tug crews heading out to the burning vessel, recalled by one of the captains in an interview with AFP, was blunt: crews were told they might not return alive, and to "say our last prayers" before casting off. By the time the fire on the tanker was out, two hours later, four firefighting tugboats had separated the Salem from a second, far larger vessel moored alongside it: the US-owned Energos Winter, a floating storage and regasification unit, or FSRU, used to receive, store, and regasify LNG for import into Egypt's grid. About ten minutes after the tanker fire began, a second, larger explosion tore through the Energos Winter, a 138,250-cubic-metre FSRU, at what one officer told AFP was the connection point between the two vessels. The combined carrying capacity of the two vessels is about 300,000 cubic metres of LNG, anchored in a port whose surrounding city, Damietta, holds more than 300,000 residents. The harbor is the kind of Mediterranean facility a population sits inside rather than beside. An FSRU is a ship-shaped floating terminal: it receives LNG at near-cryogenic temperatures, stores it in insulated tanks, and vaporizes it back into gas for pipeline export to shore. Mooring one next to a conventional LNG tanker, in a populated harbor, is a recurring pattern at Mediterranean import terminals because it lets a state buy gas without building a permanent land-based regasification plant. The pattern is efficient. It is also a blast-on-blast geometry: a fire on either vessel, or on the connection between them, is no longer a single-asset incident but a cascading-blast stack with the second fuel source meters away.
A single drone, unclaimed and unattributed, reached the moored pair on Wednesday without, in the public record, being intercepted. Egypt has not accused any actor, and a security official briefed on the forensic investigation told AFP the results could take a long time for Cairo to publish.
