Precise Bio's coverage in 3DNatives says one donor cornea can be expanded into up to 300 transparent, layered implants, each built to replicate a healthy human cornea. That ratio turns the tissue scarcity that has defined corneal transplantation for a century into a production problem, which is the kind of problem foundries solve.
Three of those implants are now in patients in Haifa, transplanted at Rambam Health Care Campus under Israel Ministry of Health authorization. The procedures completed with no serious adverse events reported. The first patient is described as showing dramatic vision restoration, though quantitative visual-acuity data has not been published. The reframe still stands or falls on a single clinical-stage startup, Precise Bio, and on whether the up to 300 figure holds in production rather than on a press page.
This is a Phase I safety trial. Three patients, safety endpoints only, years from any approved therapy. The category change is not "3D printing cures blindness." The category change is that donor scarcity is becoming a problem of process engineering, and process engineering scales differently than appeals for tissue.
