South African mines, factories and ports are moving critical systems onto private 5G — on site cellular infrastructure behind the company gate — as ransomware and grid fragility make the public web a liability for operations.
South African mines are running crushers and conveyor belts on company-controlled cellular networks. The connectivity does not cross the public internet. It runs on private 5G inside the mine gate, segregated from the office network, with its own access policies and a separate operations team watching it.
This is what the regional trade press has taken to calling the "private internet," and the term is starting to spread. A company-controlled network that replaces public connectivity for critical systems, built on private 5G, network segmentation and secure access, is moving from niche experiment to default architecture in places where the public internet has become a liability surface. South African mining, manufacturing, logistics and finance are the early case for a pattern the rest of the enterprise world is now catching up to.
The numbers behind the shift are global, not regional. The Global mobile Suppliers Association's June 2026 report counted 2,003 organisations across 88 countries that had deployed at least one private mobile network with contract value above €100,000 (about $110,000 at mid-2026 exchange rates) by the end of the first quarter. The base has been compounding at a 37% CAGR since 2019. The first quarter of 2026 alone added 48 new customer references. 5G accounts for more than half of the deployments announced since 2022, according to the standards-body summary of the same dataset. Manufacturing leads the global rank, with education and academic research in second place and mining in third. Geographic concentration sits in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The operational reality behind those deployments is narrower than the label. The pieces in evidence describe a stack, not a single switch: private cellular radios on site, IT/OT segmentation that splits the operations floor from the front office, secure access for the workers who need to touch the systems, and managed detection and response layered on top. A second, smaller cohort of 178 projects sits in a roughly $55,000 to $110,000 (€50,000 to €100,000) contract range, at mid-2026 exchange rates, that the GSA only began counting in 2024, according to a re-report of the data. The public internet is still doing email, supplier portals and the rest of office life. It is being pushed out of the critical path, not out of the building.
South Africa is an early adopter for compound reasons. Load-shedding, the country's rolling grid cuts, has made utility-backed uptime a moving target, which makes predictable private connectivity a real operational gain rather than a security ornament. Ransomware economics have pushed downtime costs high enough that the marginal cost of running a parallel network looks small. And the convergence of IT and OT, where a cyber incident on the office network can become a safety and production incident on the floor, has made the segregation argument concrete rather than theoretical. "Digital control is becoming a corporate priority," a source told IT-Online. "Private connectivity no longer means abandoning the public internet." The phrasing is the publication's, but the underlying argument, that the public internet has become a risk surface for specific critical systems rather than for browsing, is the right way to read the global data.
The implication for the rest of the enterprise world is that the South African timeline is compressed, not exceptional. The drivers behind the shift, ransomware-driven downtime, IT/OT convergence and infrastructure fragility, are global. What South African companies are doing under forced timelines, a US manufacturer or German auto-parts supplier will arrive at under routine ones: a breach, a regulator, a board risk register. The 2,003 deployment count is the early-case backlog, not the ceiling.
