If your shop is still running Cisco gear past end-of-support, the vendor wants you to treat that as an active security emergency. On Wednesday, alongside a record $17.3 billion quarter, it argued that a new AI capability has shrunk the safe-use window for unsupported networking kit to almost nothing.
Project Glasswing is the capability behind the pitch. Announced in April 2026 by Anthropic, the effort puts a specialized vulnerability-discovery model in the hands of critical-software maintainers. Cisco is one of twelve launch partners, alongside AWS, Broadcom, CrowdStrike, JPMorganChase, the Linux Foundation, NVIDIA, and Palo Alto Networks. According to Anthropic, the model has already found thousands of high-severity bugs, including some in every major operating system and every major web browser.
Trade press coverage this week reports Cisco characterizing the result as "instant death" for unsupported networking firmware, language Cisco itself has not, so far, used verbatim in public materials, but which tracks the company's earnings-call characterization of agentic AI as a force that simultaneously fuels a "networking supercycle" and expands the threat surface. The argument runs like this: AI is generating more network traffic, more network devices, and faster discovery of the bugs in those devices, so the cost of running end-of-support gear keeps going up.
Faster discovery is the new piece. Vulnerabilities in long-known firmware have always been a risk; the question has always been when, not whether, someone would find them. A model pointed at first-party and open-source network stacks, scanning continuously with vendor cooperation, shortens that gap. It is real. It is also not limited to Cisco's customer base. The same capability is being pointed at software stacks across the industry, not just one vendor's installed gear.
The commercial pitch is old. Cisco has spent decades telling customers that end-of-support routers and switches are a security risk, and the company has a clear financial interest in moving those customers to current-generation hardware. Anthropic is committing up to $100 million in Mythos usage credits across the Glasswing effort, plus $4 million in direct donations to open-source security organizations, and is giving more than forty additional groups extended access to scan first-party and open-source systems. The capability is real. The partner list spans major infrastructure and security names, not just one networking vendor with a refresh cycle to protect.
Whether the EoL math is now genuinely different, or whether the AI branding is the newest layer on a familiar pressure tactic, is the question the next twelve months will answer. For network operators, the practical version of that question is shorter: pull up Cisco's published end-of-life and end-of-sale lists, find every chassis still in production past its support date, and price the risk against the cost of replacement before Mythos puts a number on it for you.
