Russian electronic warfare has effectively made radio-controlled drones obsolete on Ukraine's contested front. The replacement is already in brigade use: AI-navigated strike drones that cost less than $10,000 a copy and arrive in numbers large enough to shift doctrine, not just tactics.
The change is straightforward: anything radio-controlled is "largely obsolete" in airspace the Russians are jamming, Forbes reported. A single operator, the reporting noted, may now program 100 drones for a mission rather than fly one.
Russian jamming at scale breaks the radio link between operator and drone. Starlink, the satellite internet service that has kept Ukrainian forces connected elsewhere, is restricted to Ukrainian territory and does not work across the border into Russia. Pre-planned routes with minimal human input at the terminal stage are what survives: the drone flies itself to the target, and the operator's job is to pick the target, not to fly the aircraft.
The Hornet, an AI-enabled fixed-wing strike drone built by the U.S. firm Autonomy, is reported at under $10,000 per unit and is already in use against Russian logistics, Forbes reports. A second family, called Darts, is another Ukrainian mid-range AI-enabled platform, part of a broader push into longer-range strike drones covered by The Defense Post.
Closer to the ground, The Fourth Law, founded by Ukrainian entrepreneur Yaroslav Azhnyuk, makes the TFL-1 autonomy module. The cheapest version runs about $150 and is built around a Raspberry Pi Zero, a tiny single-board computer that retails for around $15. In one brigade that adopted the module, mission success rose from roughly 20% to 71% and the effective kill zone extended from about 3 km to 10 km, for a per-drone cost step of roughly $500 to $550. Around 200 Ukrainian firms have attempted last-mile targeting, though only a handful are effective.
The institutional anchor is Defense AI Center A1, established under Ukraine's Ministry of Defence in March 2026 and led by Danylo Tsvok. Its remit covers autonomous systems, command tools, AI infrastructure, and the data standards that determine which autonomy modules brigades can actually plug in. The center's own announcement frames the work as the contest over the "operating system" of the war.
Ukraine's Ministry of Defence says drone units have hit more than 1 million verified targets since the start of 2026, including roughly 193,500 killed or seriously wounded Russian troops, according to the Kyiv Independent and the Defence Ministry's published figures. About 90% of Russian targets are now hit by unmanned aerial vehicles. Monthly strikes rose from roughly 105,800 in January to 200,218 in June, the ministry said.
