Canada's only maker of the deep-freeze machines quantum computers need opens its first US hub in Chicago

Quantum computers cannot run without dilution refrigerators, the near-absolute-zero machines that keep qubits stable enough to compute. Zero Point Cryogenics, the Edmonton-based company that builds them, is opening its first US service hub in Chicago at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park.

ZPC says it is one of only six companies worldwide that designs and manufactures this cryogenic infrastructure, and Canada's only domestic maker. Both the company and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker's office confirmed the Chicago location on July 23, 2026. IQMP is a 128-acre campus on Chicago's South Side, backed by the state and managed by a University of Illinois-affiliated organization.

The Chicago hub will supply ZPC's cryogenic systems to the park itself, per the company's press release. Design and production stay in Edmonton. The US footprint is service, installation, and customer support, not manufacturing.

BetaKit reports ZPC plans additional Innovation and Service Hubs in the United States, Europe, and Asia. ZPC already ships into US quantum hardware: the company joined Rigetti's Novera QPU partner program and showed a QPU-ready Model L fridge at APS Global Physics Summit 2026.

The "six companies" count comes from ZPC; it is the company talking, not an independent tally. The Canada-US split in this corner of the quantum supply chain is design-in-Canada, service-in-US, by intent.
