Blue Origin says a single oxygen valve on a BE-4 engine brought down New Glenn last month. The same engine family also powers ULA's Vulcan, and ULA has not said whether its BE-4 inventory needs the same retrofit.
The cause landed via X. On August 5, Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp posted that the company had traced the late-May fireball at Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 36 to the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines on New Glenn's first stage. The attribution came from hardware recovery and inspection after the preflight hotfire test destroyed the vehicle and damaged ground equipment, according to The Register.
The company did not name a specific failure mode. What Limp did say: the required valve changes are "small modifications" and "quickly retrofittable to existing engines," with updated hardware ready by the end of August, per his X post. Talk of Titusville carried the CEO's statement in full the same day, and SpaceNews confirmed the company is now rebuilding the pad with a revised horizontal-then-vertical integration flow, still targeting a 2026 launch.
That timeline only covers Blue Origin's side of the BE-4 ledger. ULA's Vulcan flies with two BE-4 engines on its first stage, the same engine family. ULA had not commented by the time of Limp's post on whether its own BE-4 inventory needs the identical valve modification, as The Register noted.
That makes Vulcan the open question. Vulcan is already off the US Space Force manifest after an unrelated Northrop Grumman solid rocket booster anomaly on its February launch, so any additional BE-4 issue compounds a fleet gap the Pentagon has been working to close. The question is now narrow: is the same valve on Vulcan's BE-4s, and will it need the same retrofit window?
Two recent New Glenn events are easy to conflate. The April 19 NG-3 mission failed when a cryogenic leak on the BE-3U upper-stage engine froze a hydraulic line; the FAA closed that mishap investigation in May with nine corrective actions, per SpaceNews. The May pad event sat on the first stage, on a different engine, and on a different subsystem, the oxygen valve now identified by Limp. Spaceflight Now reported the explosion at the time as a prelaunch test loss that destroyed the vehicle and damaged ground support equipment at LC-36.
