A team of Chinese researchers has published a proposal to turn the country’s South China Sea outposts into what they call “autonomous defensive hubs”: small bases whose air, sea, and land sensors and weapons are linked and partly run by AI instead of crews on the ground (SCMP).
The existing islands are widely described as static, personnel-heavy, and limited in reach, the kind of outposts critics have called sitting ducks. Networking them with autonomous systems, the proposal argues, would let each island act as one node in a multi-domain (air, sea, and land) response, capable of generating an area-denial zone (a stretch of sea or sky made dangerous or off-limits to enter) without waiting for orders from shore (Defence Security Asia, Caliber.az).
Regional outlets frame the same paper as the foundation for a doctrinal shift rather than a specific weapons contract (Zaobao, Sputnik). Whether the hubs become a real program or stay a research proposal is the open question.
