Japan's SkyDrive, Air India, and Suzuki are evaluating electric vertical takeoff aircraft over Mumbai and Delhi for cancer isotopes, donor organs, and grounded plane parts. Still a feasibility study.
A Mumbai pharmaceutical plant ships cancer drugs whose medical value drops with every hour the cargo sits in traffic. The active ingredients are short-half-life radioactive isotopes, and the route from the plant to nearby major general hospitals is the corridor SkyDrive, Air India, and Suzuki Motor Corporation want to test first. The three companies signed a memorandum of understanding on July 31 to start the feasibility study, and on August 25 they named the routes for it across India.
The partnership is now in a route-evaluation phase focused on Mumbai and the Delhi National Capital Region. The companies are explicit that the work is a feasibility study, not a service launch; the first step is mapping which routes make sense and which regulators the partners need to engage.
Three use cases anchor the study, in the order the partners describe them.
A Mumbai manufacturing plant makes diagnostic and therapeutic drugs whose potency depends on reaching patients before too much of the active material decays. The study will evaluate whether an eVTOL, or electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, can replace the road trip from the plant to "nearby major general hospitals" with a flight that bypasses Mumbai traffic. SkyDrive has not yet published a measured time for the route.
The second use case is inter-hospital transport across the Delhi NCR: donor organs, emergency medical cargo, and other time-critical payloads. Ground ambulances now spend 30 to 90 minutes on the same trips, according to the partners' framing, and SkyDrive projects its compact eVTOL can complete them in 10 to 15 minutes. That 90-to-15 comparison is the strongest hook in the announcement, but the figure is a company projection, not an independently measured result. It assumes a corridor, a vertiport, and a clearance profile that have not been built.
The third is Aircraft on Ground (AOG) parts logistics near Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. Aviation maintenance teams call an idle plane "Aircraft on Ground" and pay for that downtime by the hour. The study will test whether a small eVTOL can move a critical part from a collection hub to a maintenance base faster than a road trip through airport-area gridlock.
The cargo focus is not incidental. Passenger air-taxi services, the version of urban air mobility that has dominated startup pitch decks and demo videos for a decade, are still working through certification, public acceptance, and unit economics in every market they have entered. Cargo is the lower-stakes lane to clear first. A flight carrying a small payload of cancer drugs or a rotor blade doesn't need a full commercial passenger certification, doesn't need a public-facing vertiport, and it gives the operator real flight hours before any passenger service asks regulators for a green light. The SkyDrive, Air India, and Suzuki study is the cargo wedge of that sequence.
The Indian regulatory gate is the binding constraint, and the partners are explicit about it. The announcement says any future operations will require coordination with Indian government and regulatory authorities, and the companies plan to "broaden the research through additional stakeholder dialogue." That is the earliest possible stage of a public-private aviation lane: an MoU, a route list, and a list of regulators the partners still need to talk to.
What a reader can track from here is concrete. First, whether SkyDrive identifies the specific Mumbai plant and the receiving hospitals for the radioisotope corridor, because without named sites the corridor is still a sketch. Second, whether Delhi NCR authorities engage with the inter-hospital use case at the policy level, since organ transport is already a regulated medical chain and adding an aircraft into it requires more than a flight test. Third, whether Air India or its maintenance affiliates publish an AOG downtime figure the eVTOL route can be benchmarked against, because that is the number that turns a feasibility study into a procurement case.
Until those land, the watch item is the partner list and the regulatory dialogue, not the aircraft. The 10-to-15-minute number is what SkyDrive wants the route to look like. The route itself still has to be built.
