The $1 billion Cambridge building opens with 10 floors of interconnecting labs and a 1,100 employee launch roster, slotting next to AZ's existing 100 Binney genomic medicine footprint.
AstraZeneca opened an 18-story, 570,000-square-foot R&D centre at 290 Binney Street in Kendall Square on Monday, anchoring roughly 1,100 jobs at the new site by year's end and lifting the drugmaker's Massachusetts headcount above 3,000 within a few years.
The Cambridge building, a $1 billion project, puts 10 floors of interconnecting labs into operation, with AstraZeneca describing the underlying stack as integrating robotics, continuous automation, and agentic AI. Combined with AZ's existing 100 Binney genomic-medicine site, the new footprint will house about 2,000 researchers, the company said.
The opening is the first concrete leg of AstraZeneca's stated $50 billion US investment pledge by 2030. It lands while US biotech is still absorbing a wave of Chinese dealmaking. The company separately plans $15 billion in China through 2030, per BioPharma Dive.
"The more medicines we invent, the better it is for patients. So, when you look at China, we see it as a collaboration opportunity, but also competition," said Sharon Barr, AstraZeneca's EVP of biopharmaceuticals R&D, per the Boston Globe.
The opening is dated; the operating evidence is not. AstraZeneca has not disclosed throughput, error rates, or scientist-to-automation ratios for the new lab stack.
