ASRock listed a Radeon RX 9050 Challenger with 4GB of GDDR6 memory this week. It is the first modern graphics card in years to ship with that little VRAM, a sign that rising component costs are reshaping the budget end of the GPU stack.
The card uses AMD's latest RDNA 4 architecture with 16 compute units, a 64-bit memory bus, and a 2,600MHz boost clock, according to ASRock's spec page. It supports AMD's FSR 4 frame-rate upscaling and DirectX 12 Ultimate over PCIe 5.0, drawing power from a single 8-pin connector. An 8GB sibling launched the same day with an identical core configuration, making the 4GB version a deliberate budget cut.
The 4GB frame buffer falls well below the suggested specifications for current AAA releases like Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Halo: Campaign Evolved, per The Verge. It is positioned for esports, indie, and 1080p light gaming, the same lane Tom's Hardware estimated by noting the card carries roughly 1,024 cores and about half the power of an RX 9060.
The only visible price is a $889 Best Buy prebuilt bundle pairing the 4GB card with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500, 8GB of DDR4 system memory, and a 500GB SSD. ASRock and AMD declined to comment, and no standalone MSRP has been announced.
Without a standalone price or vendor explanation, the listing itself is the news: the budget floor of the GPU market is sliding back to 4GB as RAM and component prices climb into mid-2026.
