Medical records, children's names, and internal company documents showed up in Google results before Anthropic appeared to remove the crawl exposure Monday afternoon.
Anthropic's Claude chatbot creates a public URL when users tap "Share." Unlike Google Docs' equivalent feature, those Claude URLs ship without a default noindex header, so any third-party site that links to a shared chat gives Google's crawler a path in. This weekend, that single design choice surfaced in public search results.
A Reddit user on r/ClaudeAI first flagged Saturday that the site:claude.ai/share operator returned a long list of shared chats. 404 Media reported the issue Monday morning, and by Monday afternoon TechCrunch confirmed the operator no longer returns results, suggesting Anthropic moved to block the crawl. Futurism cataloged what the index held: a medical report tied to a real patient, clinical trial results with patient names, documents listing primary-school children's names and phone numbers, and company files marked for internal use.
Anthropic spokeswoman Amie Rotherham framed the issue as user choice to TechCrunch and Futurism: "When someone shares a conversation, they are making that content publicly accessible." That sidesteps the design question: Google Docs adds noindex to share links by default; Claude does not. Monday's fix also doesn't un-index pages Google already cached or that archive services already scraped.
Audit your own shares: search site:claude.ai/share for your name, your kids' names, and your company. Any match is exposed even after the fix. Anthropic's news page has not posted a primary statement as of Monday afternoon.
