Most early-stage quantum hardware teams will never own the one machine they cannot build a product without. In Albuquerque, four dilution refrigerators are about to be shared across five startups, turning the gating capital cost of a quantum lab into a line item on someone else's balance sheet.
Dilution refrigerators, the ultra-cold hardware that cools quantum chips to within a fraction of a degree of absolute zero (the millikelvin range), are the single largest capital line for any team building hardware that must run at those temperatures, which today means most superconducting circuit and spin-qubit (individual-electron-state) designs. A single unit can cost more than a million dollars, take a year to deliver, and require specialized staff to keep running. Most early-stage seed rounds are not large enough to cover one, let alone the two or three a serious hardware program needs. For a five-person startup, that math usually does not work. Maybell Quantum, a Denver-based cryogenic infrastructure vendor, says it will install four of those units at Roadrunner Quantum Lab (RQL) in Albuquerque, with completion targeted for September 2026. Researchers are expected to begin using the hardware as soon as calibration finishes. Maybell becomes the third major quantum equipment maker to anchor the facility, joining networking vendor Qunnect and a $4M shared quantum testbed where outside teams can run experiments on QuEra's neutral-atom hardware, set up by QuEra Computing and Roadrunner Venture Studios. Roadrunner Venture Studios expects five or more early-stage hardware teams and 20 to 30 on-site researchers to share the dilution refrigerators, control electronics, and networking rather than each tenant building a dedicated lab. That is the actual mechanism, not the ecosystem framing. Each tenant's burn rate drops by the cost of the fridge, the helium-3 and helium-4 refills, a cryogenics technician, and roughly a year of procurement time. A portion of the four refrigerators will be purchased directly by Roadrunner Venture Studios; the remainder will be supplied by Maybell. The deployment sits inside New Mexico's $450M statewide quantum initiative, which was seeded by an initial $25M public-private partnership between Economic Development New Mexico and Roadrunner Venture Studios in August 2025. Maybell is also hiring locally. The company says it is recruiting engineering and technical staff in Albuquerque to run lab operations, support customer integration, and help bring startup tenants on board. The dollar size of the announcement is small. The implication is not: a shared fridge floor only works if someone is on site to keep the cold heads cold, walk tenants through calibration, and recover the system when a chip shorts out at five millikelvin.
No on-the-record tenant or customer startup names have been attached to the deployment yet. The five-tenant, 20 to 30 researcher design is a stated capacity, not a delivered occupancy. The September 2026 installation target is a milestone that has not been hit. State communications have separately framed New Mexico's quantum push as a nationally recognized ecosystem, a policy posture rather than a measurement of the lab's commercial output.
If the four-refrigerator fleet comes online on the stated timeline, the test for RQL is whether the capex-pooling model converts into named tenants running real chips. The fridge floor is the visible part. The harder part is the queue of teams willing to use it, and the next concrete milestone is whether the lab names its first three before September.
