A four week MIT study found direct answer chatbots fostered dependency, while question asking ones preserved the skill at a cost in speed.
A four-week MIT Media Lab study found that readers who used a chatbot to evaluate paired news headlines and images got 21% better at telling fake from real news, and 15% worse at it without the AI by the end of the study (MIT Technology Review).
Roughly a quarter of those participants reported feeling sharper on the task even as their unaided accuracy slipped, a gap the lead authors call an "AI dependency paradox" (arXiv 2510.01537).
The deciding factor was not whether to use AI, but which kind. Chatbots that "told" (handing over direct answers) fostered more reliance on the assistant. Chatbots that "asked," pressing readers to reason through the question on their own, better preserved independent discernment, at a cost in speed and effort (MIT News).
The researchers frame the pattern as a cousin of the GPS effect: turn-by-turn navigation eroded drivers' route-finding memory the same way direct-answer chatbots dulled the skill they were meant to build (MIT Media Lab project page).
The study has not yet been peer-reviewed or replicated outside the lab, and it covers fake-news detection specifically. Which AI helper a reader picks is a design choice available today.
