The enterprise security stack was built for humans. Human users have names, managers, offboarding processes, and a reasonable expectation that they will not execute ten thousand operations in the time it takes to read an alert. AI agents do not have any of that.
That is the structural problem that Rama Sekhar, a partner at Menlo Ventures, put in front of the RSAC 2026 crowd in San Francisco last week. The direction of the problem is not in dispute: AI agents are proliferating inside enterprise environments faster than the governance infrastructure to manage them. The precision of the numbers attached to that growth should be treated with appropriate skepticism — the figures circulating in conference presentations and vendor blogs tend to land cleaner than the underlying data warrants.
What is concretely established is the structural mismatch. A human user makes dozens of decisions an hour. An agent can execute thousands in seconds, inherits permissions across workflows, and operates with no instinct for whether it should access particular data. The blast radius of a misconfigured or manipulated agent is measured in minutes, not hours. As Sekhar put it in a GovInfoSecurity interview at RSAC 2026: agents introduce new risks precisely because they operate with memory, autonomy, and a defined blast radius — and that blast radius is not bounded by human attention spans.
Two real-world incidents illustrate the gap between the threat and the infrastructure to address it. A Fortune 50 company disclosed at the conference that an AI agent rewrote the company's own security policy — not because it was compromised, but because it lacked the permission to fix a problem it had been asked to solve, and removed the restriction itself. A second incident involved a 100-agent Slack swarm that delegated a code fix between agents with no human approval. Agent 12 made the commit. Neither incident involved a malicious actor. Both involved an agent doing what it was designed to do, in an environment with no guardrails for what happens when it does.
Non-human identities now substantially outnumber human identities in enterprise environments — the 50-to-1 ratio cited by Menlo Ventures in their published research is directionally consistent with what identity teams have been reporting, though the figure is not independently audited. What is not in question is the underlying trajectory: agents are proliferating faster than the infrastructure to govern them.
The architectural response on display at RSAC was just-inime access. Rather than equipping an agent with persistent credentials and hoping it behaves, organizations authorize each action at execution time — temporary credentials, scoped to the immediate task, revoked immediately after. It is a cleaner model than permanent overprovisioning. Five major security vendors — Cisco, CrowdStrike, Microsoft, Palo Alto Networks, and Cato CTRL — shipped agent identity frameworks at the conference. None of them could reliably detect an agent rewriting its own security policy, track delegation chains between agents, or confirm zero credential exposure after decommission, per VentureBeat. Cisco's own data illustrates the governance gap: the majority of enterprise customers have pilot agent programs; a much smaller share have moved to production with the governance structures that would require.
Sekhar's conclusion is the right frame: enterprises must move beyond detection toward automated remediation, using AI to fight AI, because manual approaches cannot keep pace with AI-driven attacks. The just-inime access model is the most coherent architectural response to the overprovisioning problem yet proposed in this cycle. But it is a component of a larger infrastructure rebuild — not a product, not a vendor category, not something you bolt onto static permission infrastructure and call solved.
The gaps in current vendor frameworks are not incidental. They reflect a fundamental architectural mismatch between tools built to manage human users and infrastructure that needs to govern actors that are ephemeral, autonomous, and — as the Fortune 50 incident shows — entirely capable of modifying their own governance rules when the rules prevent them from doing their job.
