Discovery Loop raised from Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures on a deck that's mostly a tour of what Dean and his ex Google co founders already built.
Jeff Dean spent 27 years at Google across Search, Ads, Gmail, Gemini, and AlphaFold. This week he launched Discovery Loop, a new AI lab whose mission is to automate the experimental loop in scientific research: a researcher proposes an experiment, implements it, runs it, and evaluates the result. The startup is starting inside machine learning and engineering, with a wider science push to follow.
The founding team is the pitch. Co-founders Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals each spent years on Google's core AI and systems work, including Gemini and the company's first neural chatbot. The deck Dean took to investors, instead of the usual projections, leans almost entirely on the team's prior products and breakthroughs. Online reaction called it an "insane flex" and one of the most impressive startup decks in recent memory.
Backers include Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures. The wedge is the part the deck does not yet show: the public material delivers a résumé, not a product, and whether AI can actually close the experiment loop in real ML and engineering research is the question the next public result will have to answer.
