Andreessen Horowitz invested in Black Forest Labs in 2024. Now an A16Z partner is showing off the firm's synthetic video model, Flux 3, by generating fake children making plausible 1990s predictions about computers.
The video looks like a 1990s classroom. Kids in period clothes. A teacher off-frame asking how they'll use computers when they grow up. "They'll probably do our homework." "Maybe they'll make movies for us." "I think we'll just tell them what to do." None of it was filmed. None of those kids existed. It was generated by Black Forest Labs' Flux 3, and the Andreessen Horowitz partner who posted it, Justine Moore, called it "exceptional at generating historical footage." That is not a product review. It is a portfolio flex. An A16Z partner just ran a public-timeline ad for a portfolio company, and the company got to demonstrate its newest model, Flux 3, on the cheapest possible marketing surface: a short video of plausible, period-accurate children. The clip reached Moore's followers on her personal timeline, with no paid distribution, no press release, and no need to clear a platform's content moderation queue. Black Forest Labs has since raised $300 million at a $3.25 billion valuation per a December 2025 TechCrunch report, and A16Z is reportedly in talks to lead a $200 million round on top of that. The promo and the pipeline now overlap.
The synthetic kids in the video are not saying random things. Their lines echo predictions real children made in earlier decades. A 1988 first grader in Kentucky wrote, as quoted in the Gizmodo piece, "I want my robot to do things for my mom and me. I want my robot to do my homework." Flux 3 is not inventing a 1990s voice from nothing. It is interpolating a documented past from its training corpus, then dressing the result in period clothing and lighting. That is what makes the video plausible: the future-predicting child is a recognisable American archetype, so the forgery reads as memory rather than fabrication.
A 30-second clip that looks like recovered home video is now a working unit of synthetic history. It can be slotted into a documentary, a news package, or a campaign ad with a caption swap. The Gizmodo columnist who surfaced Moore's tweet flags the broader risk: realistic AI video can "change how we understand history." Whether that means replacement (old footage quietly swapped for synthetic) or dilution (so much synthetic "historical footage" exists that no single clip can be trusted) is the open question. Both outcomes sit downstream of one capability demo landing on a brand-aware timeline.
Provenance is the lever, and right now it is mostly absent. No publicly available forensic watermark allows a reader to verify whether a given video came from Black Forest Labs. Platform-side, the major social networks label some AI-generated content, but the labels are inconsistent across networks and frequently stripped when a clip is downloaded and re-uploaded. Short, plausibly-historical clips are exactly the category users crop, remix, and decontextualise. The working mental model for a smart reader this week: a video of kids "from the past" saying something memorable is, by default, a synthetic artefact unless there is a verified provenance chain behind it. That chain rarely exists.
