In a live NATO exercise in Germany, Ukrainian drone teams destroyed so many US tanks that Army planners restarted the same fight to teach soldiers to hide.
The M1A2 Abrams sat exposed on a German field, its turret a target every drone in the sky could see. By the second week of the NATO exercise, the crews had stopped pretending the tank could win a fair fight. They were learning how to lose on purpose, and how to lose less.
Combined Resolve, the US Army's semiannual NATO war game, ran from April 9 to May 10, 2026, at the Hohenfels training area in Germany. The US side fielded the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, on rotation from Fort Hood, Texas, with M1A2 tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. Ukraine sent the drone teams that had spent three years picking off exactly that kind of armor on real battlefields.
The script for the latest iteration was simple: let the Ukrainians hunt the US brigade. Drone operators easily spotted US armored vehicles from above, then either simulated bomb drops or moved close enough for a kamikaze-style strike. US crews were destroyed so often that planners "respawned" the unit and reinserted it into the same scenario, per reporting from the Wall Street Journal, republished by Ars Technica. Respawn, in this context, is a training tool: the exercise software treats the destroyed vehicles as available again, so the soldiers run the same engagement repeatedly until the countermeasures stick.
"Using the drones with the Army, it keeps everyone on edge," an unidentified US soldier said in a Combined Resolve promotional video. "There is never a safe spot or safe moment in the game anymore."
The two-week run was built around that discomfort. US troops learned to disperse, conceal their vehicles from aerial observation, and apply electronic-warfare tools against the drones, then ran the engagement again with the new tactics. The point was not to score a victory but to compress three years of Ukrainian battlefield experience into a script the Army could rehearse, score, and revise. By the end of the iteration, the same brigade that had been wiped out on day one was getting vehicles through the kill zone in new configurations the exercise had not been written for.
The Combined Resolve drill is not an isolated case. In May 2026, Ukrainian drone crews also took part in Aurora 26, a Swedish-led NATO exercise, where a mock NATO mechanized assault by tanks and IFVs had to be reset after the Ukrainians took out dozens of vehicles, the Kyiv Independent reported. Two exercises, two countries, same pattern: NATO planners asking the country with the most drone-versus-armor experience to come stress-test the alliance's heaviest equipment, then iterating on the result.
What the Army is updating is the doctrine written before 2022, when massed armor was expected to move under cover of air superiority and electronic warfare, and an opposing force was expected to need time and ammunition to find and kill a brigade's vehicles. The Ukrainian drone teams at Hohenfels and in Sweden showed how quickly that assumption can be broken: a small first-person-view drone, operating from cover the tank's crew cannot see, can disable a vehicle whose own sensors were designed for a different kind of fight. The exercise software's respawn loop is the visible sign: the loss is engineered, the lessons are extracted, and the same brigade is sent back into the kill zone with new habits.
The next iteration of the script will be measured against a peer adversary that has studied the same Hohenfels footage and the same kill chains. The drill ended in May; the adaptation does not.
