Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) lifted off Tuesday on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral, carrying two flexible robotic arms and three Mission Extension Pods (MEPs), the standalone jetpacks the system bolts onto aging satellites to extend their lives. All four payloads deployed within about an hour of liftoff.
The MRV and its three companions will spend roughly a year transferring to a circular geosynchronous orbit more than 22,000 miles (about 36,000 km) over the equator, the same band where civilian and military communications satellites, missile-warning platforms, and a growing share of spy satellites operate. Real servicing work begins around mid-2027.
Ars Technica calls the MRV "arguably the most advanced servicing satellite ever launched" and qualifies the framing with "that we know about." China has operated in this domain publicly since 2016, when it placed a robotic-arm satellite in GEO. Its 2021 Shijian-21 (SJ-21) docked with a defunct Chinese navigation satellite and towed it to a higher disposal orbit. In January 2025, per Ars Technica, China launched SJ-25, which completed what appears to be the first refueling demonstration so far from Earth after docking with SJ-21.
Northrop's release frames the mission as a decade-long program, with the US Naval Research Laboratory tracing the spacecraft's robotic-arm lineage. What remains unknown: whether MRV completes its first refueling and repositioning at GEO, expected around 2027.
