At Fort Indiantown Gap, eight soldiers train the U.S. Army to fly cheap attack drones and to shoot them down with shotguns.
A Pennsylvania soldier aims a shotgun at a small quadcopter and calls it "hostile." The round is birdshot, the target is foam and plastic, and the point is to teach muscle memory for a fight the U.S. Army now plans to lose in volume.
The same eight-person unit running that exercise has just been named the Pentagon's primary training site for the cheap attack drones those guns are meant to defeat. Fort Indiantown Gap, the Pennsylvania National Guard's 17,000-acre state headquarters, will host the new-equipment training for the Top 11 drones picked in the Department of War's first Drone Gauntlet competition, according to DroneLife.
The dual role is the story the wire procurement notice won't tell you. A state Guard lab now sits at the center of both halves of the cheap-drone problem: the buying and the defeating.
The hub designation came down this month after Drone Gauntlet 1 wrapped in June 2026. The Pentagon's Drone Dominance program evaluated drones on three axes: flight performance, military-operator evaluations, and production and supply-chain capacity. The Top 11 were announced for orders. The Pennsylvania Guard's UAS Training and Innovation Facility, known as TIF, takes delivery of each system, puts it through its paces, takes manufacturer training, and rewrites the protocols to fit Army doctrine. Active-duty and reserve units then cycle through TIF before taking their assigned systems into the field.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nathan Shea, TIF's officer-in-charge, framed the selection as confirmation of the Guard's pre-eminent position in military drone development. The claim lands because the same lab was already writing the counter-drone playbook by hand.
Soldiers there practice low-tech counter-UAS tactics, primarily shotguns against quadcopters, because the cheap-drone era has made the cost curve favor offense. A hobbyist quadcopter does not need a missile to bring down. The Army is buying one-way attack drones in bulk, and it is teaching soldiers to defeat exactly that class of target with shotguns and other low-tech means. The contradiction is structural: the same service writing the offensive playbook is also writing the defensive one, and it is doing both in a single state Guard innovation lab rather than a traditional procurement school.
The lab's signature artifact is a claw-equipped drone that won the Innovation category at the Army's Best Drone Warfighter Competition last February. The claw retrieves downed quadcopters from the battlefield, which solves a problem cheap drones created: after a fight, the litter is everywhere, and intact airframes are intelligence for the other side. The claw drone is not in the Top 11. It is a TIF invention for the cleanup problem the Top 11 will make worse.
TIF's mission set is deliberately odd for a state Guard unit. The eight-person team takes delivery of qualified drones, runs the manufacturer training, and adapts protocols for military use. The same team tests one-way attack drones for forward units and runs counter-UAS classes. The unit is small enough that the people writing the offense doctrine are the same people teaching the defense, and the people inventing the litter tools work one bay over.
The federal hook is real. Drone Dominance is the Pentagon's first attempt to scale cheap-drone procurement at wartime tempo. The Top 11 designation is the buying signal. The TIF training pipeline is the fielding signal. A state Guard base is the fielding site because it is the only place already running all three jobs, flying, shooting down, and cleaning up, under one roof.
The forward tension is whether the shotgun-and-claw toolkit can keep up with the next Drone Gauntlet. If the next round picks faster, cheaper, or autonomous drones, TIF's eight-person team becomes the bottleneck. The Army has not said when the second Gauntlet runs. The fielding rate at Indiantown Gap is now the pace the rest of the service will run at.
