The U.S. Geological Survey could soon be asked to run mobile quantum gravity surveys across at least three priority critical-minerals focus areas, under a House bill introduced in July. The Quantum-Enhanced Critical Minerals Mapping Act of 2026 (H.R. 9646), sponsored by Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) on July 13, 2026, would direct the agency to scan zones identified by its Earth Mapping Resources Initiative with a sensor that measures tiny variations in Earth's gravitational field (The Qubit Report).
A quantum gravity gradiometer reads those gravitational variations to map density differences underground, narrowing where a drill rig is worth sending. The bill treats the technique as ready to scale into federal mapping work.
The field record is thinner than the policy language. Infleqtion, a U.S. quantum sensing company, announced a planned 2027 Colorado field test at the grand opening of the Colorado Quantum Innovation Center in Louisville. The company is evaluating sites in Hurd's district; the demonstration is separate from the USGS surveys H.R. 9646 would authorize.
What remains open: how a quantum gravity gradiometer performs against existing airborne gravity, magnetic, and seismic surveys plus drill cores in real terrain, and whether the "at least three" focus areas survive committee and floor action. Independent field validation, not the bill or the demo calendar, is the watch item through 2027.
