Quantum computers spend most of their working day being retuned, not computing. A Singapore quantum-software firm and a Boston control-stack vendor said Wednesday they will try to shrink that gap by running calibration routines directly on the same hardware that drives the qubits. Neither side has named a timeline, a benchmark, or a customer.
Horizon Quantum Computing and Quantum Machines said their strategic collaboration will target embedded calibration for Horizon's first in-house hardware testbed, a modular superconducting system called Ember-1. The two companies want to use Quantum Machines' OPX1000 control platform, the orchestration layer that drives the qubits, to run calibration routines that update parameters during a run, eliminating the need for lengthy offline retuning sessions.
The stated goal is higher uptime and more frequent parameter updates without halting the system. Trade-press coverage and HPC Wire carried the same announcement.
The bet is that the control layer, not the chip, is where today's uptime bottleneck actually moves. Quantum Machines' OPX platform already serves that lane for other hardware teams, so the open question is what Horizon's software adds that existing customers do not already have. The press release offers no qubit count for Ember-1, no prior calibration interval to compare against, no uptime benchmark, and no ship date.
