Andy Markoff carried a whiteboard and grease pencil on his forearm during missions as a Marine special-operations operator. The improvised surface let his team read the plan mid-raid without radios, batteries, or another screen to manage. Now the co-founder and CEO of Smack Technologies has raised a $61M Series B to replace that whiteboard with a flexible computer screen strapped to the same spot, running the company's Omega AI on a wrist device called Alpha.
According to a c4isrnet profile of the company, Smack is positioning Alpha as "decision dominance" hardware: a flexible screen wrapped around the forearm, a little like a quarterback's sleeve, that processes and displays tactical information locally rather than piping it over a fragile field network.
The bet against the helmet is deliberate. Most military AI today runs on computers and servers miles from the operator; the answer is relayed over radios, tablets, or heads-up displays integrated into helmets. The helmet route has weight, battery draw, optical-stack complexity, and the cognitive cost of putting new imagery directly in the operator's line of sight. Markoff's argument is that the forearm is already where commanders improvised. It does not interfere with aiming, it does not require new optics, and the operator can glance at it on their own time.
In Smack's own account of the round, the company says Alpha is a software surface for its Omega AI, meaning the screen is one possible output, but the harder engineering question is the model. Much battlefield intelligence arrives from cloud-processed models that need bandwidth the field does not have. Smack's pitch is that Omega runs the relevant inference locally, so the operator gets a recommendation even when the radios are down.
The screen on the wrist is a delivery mechanism. The harder problem is whether a model small enough to run on a battery-powered forearm device can do enough of the cognitive work a radio operator does today, and whether the screen's limited real estate is enough to surface that output at a glance.
The bet is testable. If a major program of record commits to a competing helmet HUD as the standard issue, Smack's wrist-first thesis loses its cleanest wedge. If a second or third defense investor writes a check that prices the company for a hardware-plus-software platform play rather than a screen business, the Series B starts to read as a stepping stone rather than a destination. Either outcome is plausible inside 18 months.
What is not yet visible: the lead investor, prior round size, post-money valuation, or any named DoD pilot. The c4isrnet profile does not name a customer or program of record, and the company's own materials describe a founder and team of former military personnel with operational experience, not a procurement relationship. Treating Alpha as a procurement shift would be a stretch on the current evidence. Treating the Series B as an engineering bet on edge inference is a closer read of the public material.
Smack's argument is that the operator's forearm was already a working command surface, and the whiteboard was the previous version of the same product. The $61M buys the company time to test whether a flexible screen and a local model can do the job faster, with fewer dropped calls to a radio operator who is already busy.
