Elve hit the second highest readiness level for a high power satellite amplifier. The next test is which mission agrees to fly it.
For decades, U.S. satellite payloads have had a single domestic source for the high-power radio amplifiers that sit behind their antennas. A small California lab called Elve says it has built a credible second, after reaching the second-highest rung of NASA's nine-step technology-readiness scale for a 100-watt millimeter-wave traveling wave tube amplifier on August 19, 2026.
About six weeks before that announcement, the Department of Justice forced TransDigm to abandon a $960 million acquisition of Stellant, the company Elve is now challenging. The Antitrust Division's stated concern was competition in defense radar components, including those used in the Aegis Combat System and F-16 fighters, not space payload tubes directly. But the logic travels. Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael P. Duffey told DOJ in a related statement that the proposed deal would have left the Pentagon dependent on a single supplier for hardware it considers critical.
Stellant's own website says it is the only manufacturer of space-qualified traveling wave tubes in the United States. The company claims more than 340 million on-orbit hours for its tubes, a figure that reflects the fielded base across decades of U.S. military and commercial satellites. Elve, founded by Diana Gamzina, has none of that history. Its 100-watt amplifier has not flown.
That gap is the real next test. TRL-8 means a system is fully qualified in its operational environment, but it is one step below flight heritage, the record of a part operating through a real mission. Aerospace buyers, especially in national-security programs, treat the two as different things. A qualified amplifier is a candidate. A flown amplifier is a known quantity.
Stellant's defense of its position is straightforward. The 340 million on-orbit hours are real hours on real satellites. Switching costs are real. The company was assembled in 2021 by Arlington Capital Partners from L3Harris Electron Devices and Narda Microwave-West, which means the supplier base Elve is challenging was itself a rollup of the only two U.S. makers in the field. The TransDigm deal would have concentrated that further; its abandonment preserves the status quo for now.
Elve's argument is that qualification is enough to change procurement behavior, even before flight. The Department of Defense has spent two years arguing, through the Stellant transaction, that it does not want to be locked into a single supplier for this hardware class. TRL-8, by Elve's reading, gives the Pentagon an alternative to point to next time it writes a contract.
Whether any mission actually flies Elve's hardware is a separate question. The lab has not named a launch customer. Stellant is still on contract for every U.S. space-qualified tube flying today. The next test is concrete: which program office, which payload integrator, and which mission agrees to be the first to carry an Elve amplifier into orbit.
If that happens, the Stellant monopoly ends in practice, not just on paper. If it does not, TRL-8 is a milestone without a market.
