The footage is real. The question it raises is what visibility now costs, and who can buy it.
The wider context makes the encounter more than a stunt. The Philippine Coast Guard has reported a year-on-year increase in Chinese maritime presence in and around the country's exclusive economic zone, or EEZ, the 200-nautical-mile band where Manila has resource rights but not full sovereignty. The Chinese embassy in Washington said it was "not familiar with the situation" and had nothing to share. The Philippine embassy urged "all parties to avoid actions that would escalate tensions, especially if found trespassing through the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone." Seasats CEO Mike Flanigan framed the encounter as a business outcome, telling Reuters: "We're able to go out and film and get up close and record all this data off of a Chinese ship." Seasats says its drones have previously operated near PLA Navy Type 055 destroyers and Type 056 corvettes, which suggests the June 16 run was a pattern, not a one-off. That changes three things at once. The Chinese government's "nothing to share" is a no-comment posture, not a denial, and an embassy statement is not third-party corroboration.
