Constellation, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the University of Chicago, and quantum startup Infleqtion are setting up the first major U.S. utility test of whether quantum can help manage AI driven grid demand.
Constellation Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the University of Chicago, and quantum hardware startup Infleqtion are setting up the first major U.S. utility R&D test of whether a quantum computer can help run a power grid under data-center and AI load. Hardware is due in Chicago in 2027.
The test pairs a planned deployment of Infleqtion's Sqale machine at the Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park (IQMP) with a newly opened Chicago Quantum Innovation Center, an applied R&D hub focused on grid problems. Users will reach the system through the National Quantum Algorithm Center (NQAC) using Infleqtion's Superstaq software, tied into NVIDIA NVQLink for low-latency coupling with GPU clusters.
The inaugural NQAC Grand Challenges program names a first target: Quantum Fuel Loading Optimization (Q-FLO), a method for arranging nuclear-reactor fuel assemblies to maximize output under safety limits. Two other focus areas, grid contingency analysis and unit commitment modeling, are standard classical-optimization problems the team will try to translate to quantum workflows.
University of Chicago's Prof. Fred Chong and researcher Dhirpal Shah are paired with Infleqtion CTO Pranav Gokhale, Constellation, and EPRI. The companies frame the work as research, not production. Whether quantum can move the needle on any of these problems is the open question; the 2027 hardware arrival is when the team expects to start finding out.
